On August 10, 2009, two thousand children with autism and other developmental disabilities marched through the streets of Thiruvananthapuram City in Kerala, India to bring autism awareness among the public.
First of its kind in India the autism awareness march under the organizational leadership of Center for Social Change International for Autism India, an affiliate of Center for Social Change was preceded by a workshop on autism that was conducted in Thiruvananthapuram and also a public meeting on the third day.
In the workshop, 60 to 80 people from different walks of life participated. They include professionals,parents, administrators,students and other interested groups who discussed the medical, educational,therapeutic and diagnostic aspects of autism in India.
In the public meeting at VJT Hall in Thiruvananthapuram city on August 10 2009, following the autism march, central and state ministers and eminent political leaders and leaders from different religious groups spoke over the issue of autism that has now become an epidemic of India.
Center for Social Change International for Autism India also released a book written on autism in Malayalam at this event for the benefit of parents of children with autism.
